About Shannon – The Creative VA

shannon_gc2Hello, thank you for visiting my site. My name is Shannon and my clients refer to me as ‘The Creative VA’…hence the name of my website, Creative VA Services.

People often ask me how I got started as a virtual assistant, and I always say, ‘It was purely by accident.’ I have this wonderful habit of being in the right place at the right time. 🙂 I think it’s a good habit to have. Don’t you?

Anyway….a little bit about me. I grew up in a beautiful little beach town on the Central Coast of California called Cambria. I moved from there to Vancouver, WA in 2002. I am a single, work at home mom with a beautiful daughter who is about to go off to college and leave the nest.

I started building my virtual assistant business in March of 2005, but at that time, I did not know that what I was doing was called virtual assisting. Before I was a VA I was working for a company that made information products for Dentists. I was an administrative assistant for the company’s sales team. I absolutely hated it!

All I could think about was that I am a woman who is college educated with a degree in Network Administration and a background in Web Site Design. I wanted something more, something different that would allow me to do what I love. At the time, I didn’t even know what that was, but after a year there, the Universe knew I was not happy and gave me what I asked for. They let me go.

So now what? I put my resume together and started looking for another “JOB”. While I was looking for a new “JOB”, I got a call from a man who was a food distributor for a large company based in New York. He loved my resume and I could tell by the tone of his voice that I pretty much had what he was looking for. I just needed to meet him at Starbucks for a formal interview. There was one problem though…the place of work was a 45 minute commute each way. Not to mention, since the job was in another state, I would have to pay two sets of State income taxes. This was not very appealing to me :-(.

So I called him back and said ‘Thank you Gary for the opportunity, but Beaverton is just too far for me to commute everyday. I was really hoping to find someplace closer to Vancouver.’

Gary asked me if I had a computer, I said yes. He asked if I had an internet connection, I said yes…he then said “Well then, once I train you on the ordering and invoicing system, YOU CAN WORK FROM HOME“. Those were magic words to me! So I told him I would meet him for the interview in Beaverton. The following day I met Gary and he hired me on the spot.

After 1 week of training, I was off and running WORKING AT HOME. I was so excited!

I really enjoyed being able to work from home, but I felt like I could be doing more. The number of hours I worked for Gary each week, was only about 15.

So I started researching and I read the book ‘Rich Dad, Poor Dad’ by Robert Kiyosaki and discovered the terms residual income, recurring income, and outsourcing.

So I took a deeper look at outsourcing and found the term Virtual Assistant. My Light Bulb Moment! – This is what I was already doing for Gary. This was fantastic!
